Programs

After School Care

The after school program follows Roanoke City Schools calendar and accepts children from all city schools.  With the help of local community partners we offer tutoring, literacy enrichment, STEAM activities, physical health and nutrition, social-emotional learning curriculum, and several cultural arts programs.

Academic Enrichment

STEAM

At least twice weekly the elementary students engage in hands on interactive STEAM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

The Literacy Program

Elementary children participate in experiential reading and writing activities to increase essential literacy skills.

The Tutoring Program

During tutoring sessions, students complete their homework and then participate in hands-on STEM activities with the support of volunteer tutors and professional staff.

Wellness

Mental and Emotional Wellness

Through a long standing partnership with Family Service of Roanoke Valley and on-going professional development opportunities, the West End children are provided emotional, behavioral and mental health supports to build coping strategies and self-regulation skills.

The Fitness and Nutrition Program

Children learn to make healthy eating choices and participate in a variety of physical activities that promote lifelong health.

Social Emotional Learning Groups

All West End students participate in various social emotional learning groups offered by our staff and by partners. Family Service of Roanoke Valley offers Positive Action to our elementary students and the Teen Outreach Program to our middle and high school students. These are evidence based curriculum shown to impact school success and to decrease risky behaviors.

Leadership Groups

West End Center takes it’s responsibility to grow the next generation of leaders seriously. Through a variety of strategies and activities, our students are taught from an early age that they are leaders and are expected to act as such. Our students choose to volunteer with younger students, help keep West End tidy and are learning what it means to lift others up rather than putting others down.

Financial Literacy and Job Readiness Education

Middle and High School students have the opportunity to gain knowledge and skills to support their future financial independence through partnerships with different community organizations. Rising Juniors and Seniors are given the chance to work at internships at West End to gain job experience.

Summer Program

West End Center offers an 8 week full day summer program with an early drop off option. Along with literacy and STEAM activities, the students also engage in structured and unstructured out door play, weekly swimming, hiking and running programs, roller skating and other fun and enriching off site activities. The biggest hit of the summer program is the West End Walk series, sponsored by The Grandin Theatre with help from local law enforcement agencies and RunAbout Sports when the students walk to the Grandin Theatre, receive popcorn, drinks and fruit, watch a movie and walk home!
