Volunteer Spotlight: Claire's Commitment to Making a Difference

June 11, 2026

At West End Center, we are fortunate to have volunteers who make a lasting impact on our students every day, and Claire is one of those special people.

For the past three years, Claire has been a familiar face at West End Center, generously giving her time, energy, and talents to support our students. Whether she's helping during homework time, assisting with Jason's groups, joining students during free time, or lending a hand wherever needed, Claire is always willing to jump in. In fact, many of our students compete for her attention during homework help because they enjoy spending time with her so much!

Beyond her regular volunteer hours, Claire has gone above and beyond to support West End Center. She has organized supply drives to help provide fun outdoor activities for our summer program and even uses her creativity to give back. Claire designs and sells greeting cards at Black Dog and other locations throughout Roanoke, donating a portion of her proceeds to support West End Center programs.

Claire first began volunteering in 10th grade after deciding she wanted to find a meaningful way to spend her after-school hours.

"I really enjoy working with kids, so I searched for an after-school program where I could tutor elementary school students," Claire shared. "My mom used to be an elementary school teacher and knew about the WEC, so we began volunteering there once or twice a week together. Ever since then, I've tried to come at least once every week and have loved getting to know all of the amazing kids, staff, and fellow volunteers at the WEC."

For Claire, the mission of West End Center is deeply personal.

"Many of the kids at the WEC will one day attend my high school, Patrick Henry High School," she said. "Some of my classmates used to attend the WEC, and I find it rewarding to give back to a cause that is so instrumental in preparing youth for success in their teenage and adult years."

Claire also hopes to pursue a career in pediatric medicine, making WEC's focus on supporting the whole child especially meaningful.

"I see firsthand how the WEC helps keep children happy and healthy. Through nutritious meals, academic enrichment activities, and lots of outside time, the WEC helps every student with their physical and emotional wellbeing. Seeing everything this cause does for children is inspiring."

When she's not volunteering, Claire has been busy excelling both academically and athletically. She recently graduated from Patrick Henry High School as Co-Salutatorian of her class and completed her senior lacrosse season, capping off 12 years of playing the sport. Her dedication in the classroom, on the field, and in the community exemplifies the leadership and perseverance she models for our students every day.

As Claire prepares to begin her college journey, we're grateful that she plans to continue volunteering at West End Center this summer and during college breaks. Her dedication, kindness, and enthusiasm have made a tremendous difference in the lives of our students.

For anyone considering volunteering, Claire offers simple advice:

"Definitely do it! Volunteering with kids in particular is so fun, and it is so exciting to watch kids make progress in understanding a math topic or reaching a higher reading level. The WEC is a great place to volunteer because everyone is so kind and motivating."

Thank you, Claire, for three years of service and for the countless ways you've supported West End Center. We can't wait to see all the amazing things you'll accomplish in the future!
