Volunteer Spotlight - DeeDee
At West End Center, our volunteers bring heart, experience, and a deep commitment to the students we serve—and DeeDee is a wonderful example of that impact in action.
DeeDee was first introduced to West End Center through her work as a teacher, where she taught students who also attended the program. Reflecting on that connection, she shared, “I was impressed by the staff’s commitment to each individual child and their willingness to work through challenges alongside them.” That admiration quickly turned into action, as she chose to give her time as a volunteer—an opportunity that has also allowed her to reconnect with former students and continue doing what she loves most.
For DeeDee, the mission is deeply personal. “I believe every child deserves support—whether that’s academic, social, or emotional. Every child deserves to feel valued,” she said. That belief shows up in the way she spends her time at the Center. Whether she’s helping with homework, sitting and talking, coloring, or playing outside, DeeDee focuses on building meaningful connections with each child.
While many volunteers can point to one standout moment, DeeDee says it’s something more consistent that stays with her. “Honestly, it’s not just one moment—it’s the feeling I leave with every time. I always walk out with a smile on my face.”
Volunteering has also had a meaningful impact on her personally. After stepping away from the classroom, DeeDee missed working with children. “Volunteering at West End Center has allowed me to reconnect with what I love most—building relationships and supporting young people,” she shared.
Outside of volunteering, DeeDee has a big heart for animals—“every kind,” as she puts it.
When asked what she would say to someone considering volunteering, her answer is simple and heartfelt: “Do it! You’ll get far more out of the experience than you expect.”
